Asthma Review

Your surgery is taking part in a new local NHS patient health improvement programme designed to improve outcomes in patients with asthma.

You have received this message because your healthcare team have identified you as someone who may benefit from an asthma review. This review will help your healthcare team better understand your asthma needs ensure that individuals with symptoms have access to appropriate support services.

What will this involve?

This service is designed to support any symptoms you may be experiencing related to asthma, and monitor your current control.

Step 1: Completing your questionnaire - this can be accessed via your portal at the bottom of this page, allowing you to answer questions regarding your current symptoms, management, and general wellbeing. This gives you an opportunity to tell your healthcare team how you're doing and share your personal preferences in relation to an enhanced review.

Step 2: If you have indicated that you are experiencing significant asthma symptoms, complications, or concerns, you will be invited for an enhanced asthma review. This will involve a 30-minute asthma assessment, where you will be asked more detailed questions about your asthma and undergo some useful tests. These are:

  • Spirometry - a test that checks how well you can breathe by using a machine (spirometer) to measure your lung function by recording the amount of air you exhale and how fast you do it. (You would be asked to blow into a mouthpiece connected to a spirometer - like blowing up a balloon)

  • FeNO (fractional exhaled nitric oxide) - a test that measures a gas (nitric oxide) in your breath to measure the amount of airway inflammation. (This test also requires you to blow into a mouthpiece)

Step 3: Depending on your questionnaire and test results, you will have the opportunity to receive further education on how best to manage your asthma and where appropriate, the opportunity to be seen by a clinician with a specialist interest in asthma.

By taking part in this health improvement process, you could benefit from the following:

  • Improved asthma control - including symptoms, exercise tolerance and quality of life

  • Improved knowledge about your condition and how best to manage it

  • Reduced chance of an emergency admission to hospital
