Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Lipid Detection & Optimisation Programme Review

The Lipid Detection & Optimisation Programme is part of the Your Healthier Future cardiovascular prevention initiative, launched in August 2024 across Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. This innovative programme, developed in partnership with Cambridgeshire & Peterborough ICB and ECLIPSE, was designed to enhance lipid management by identifying and engaging eligible patients for lipid-lowering therapy (LLT) in line with NICE guidelines.

Using a digital-first patient engagement approach, the programme leveraged SMS communication, online educational lander pages, and dedicated patient support teams to proactively reach out to those who could benefit from lipid-lowering interventions. By integrating automated patient engagement and structured data analytics, practices were able to efficiently identify, inform, and initiate treatment for high-risk individuals.

This initiative aimed to:

  • Improve the detection of patients at risk of cardiovascular disease and not protected by lipid lowering therapy.
  • Increase lipid lowering therapy initiation rates for eligible individuals.
  • Ensure adherence to lipid-lowering therapy through follow-up and monitoring.

Your Impact: Results and Achievements

The response to the Complete Programme has been exceptional, with significant engagement and positive patient outcomes across the participating practices. Your contributions have been instrumental in achieving the following results:

  • 7,184 patients successfully contacted via SMS.
  • 4,829 patient questionnaires completed, ensuring informed decision-making and patient involvement.
  • 1,232 successfully initiated on lipid-lowering therapy.
  • 627 awaiting prescription and 145 requiring updated LFTs.
  • 624 patients requesting further discussion before proceeding.

Practices that engaged with the Complete Programme demonstrated significantly higher rates of statin initiation and adherence compared to non-participating practices.

Across the Complete Practices, with a conservative estimated Number Needed to Treat (NNT) of ~20 across the Lipid Optimisation pathways, this progress so far equates to over 60 major cardiovascular events being prevented.

We extend our sincere gratitude to all participating practices for your dedication and commitment to improving patient outcomes. Your efforts are making a tangible impact on cardiovascular disease prevention and long-term patient health.
