What Is the Norfolk Biologics Register?

The Norfolk Biologics Register (NBR) is a new initiative designed to support safe clinical care of patients prescribed biologics involving the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital, Norfolk GPs and NHS Norfolk & Waveney integrated care services. The register will mean all people directly involved in your care will have all the information they need in one place irrespective of whether they work in the community or at the hospital.

What Are Biologics?

Biologics are a group of medicines with a targeted action used to treat conditions such as inflammatory arthritis, Crohn's disease, psoriasis and age-related macular degeneration. They are usually prescribed by specialists in hospitals and whilst highly effective, they require close monitoring. It is important that your hospital and GP work together to make sure that you receive safe and effective care.

Why Should I Join the Register?

By joining the register, you can help improve your care and help contribute to better care for others. Here's how it works:

  1. Centralised Management: The register will keep all your biologic information in one place making it easier for your healthcare providers to coordinate your care.

  2. Timely Reminders: The register will automatically remind you and your healthcare team about important tests and check-ups, ensuring they are not missed.

  3. Early Detection of Complications: Any health problems caused by your treatment can be identified more easily and treated earlier.

  4. Access to Educational Materials: The register will give you information to help you to understand and manage your biologic medicines.

  5. Improved Communication: The register will improve communication between you and your GP and hospital doctors to help with joined-up care.

  6. Healthcare Insights: Data from the register will help the NHS understand which patients benefit most from specific biologics. This will help the NHS to ensure fair access and effective treatment.
